Intel has now joined AMD as we enter the era of the monster sized CPU sockets. The Intel XEON-SP based on the Skylake architecture is a departure from the E5 series as we jump from 2011 pads to a monstrous 3647 connections. We are now blessed with up 28-cores and 44-PCIe lanes with 6 channels of DDR4 memory goodness at up to 2666MHz. You will need deep pockets to jump to the very top end processor, but with Skylake-SP there are some real performance gains this time.
